Governor Barasa Calls for Unity in Kakamega County Development
Political leaders in Kakamega County are being urged to set aside political divisions and focus on the completion of significant multi-billion shilling projects that promise to catalyze local development. Governor Fernandes Barasa emphasized the importance of collaboration between national and county governments during a recent inspection tour of key construction sites, including the Sh10 billion Kakamega Level Six Referral Hospital and the Sh6.6 billion Bukhungu International Stadium.
Inspection Tour Highlights
During his visit, Governor Barasa expressed optimism that these long-awaited projects, which faced considerable delays during the tenure of his predecessor, Wycliffe Oparanya, would be completed within six months. “Those critics on social media claiming that no work is ongoing should visit these sites personally to witness the progress,” Barasa urged, calling for unity among local leaders.
Encouragement for Community Support
Governor Barasa’s call to action extends beyond politicians to the general public. He highlighted the need for the people of Kakamega to support these developmental projects. “Encouraging support for what is beneficial and depoliticizing government initiatives will ensure that all projects are completed on time,” he asserted.
Health and Employment Opportunities
The Kakamega Level Six Referral Hospital, a significant health investment, aims to provide much-needed services once operational. Governor Barasa revealed that an inventory of medical equipment is already underway in partnership with the Ministry of Health. He anticipates that the facility will not only enhance healthcare services but also create 2,000 jobs for local residents and provide training opportunities for students from Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology.
This 750-bed facility, with construction initiated in 2016, recently received an allocation of Sh2 billion from the national government to help facilitate its completion. Barasa mentioned that payments to the previous contractor would be handled concurrently with ongoing works to ensure that progress is unimpeded.
Bukhungu International Stadium’s Progress
Turning his attention to Bukhungu International Stadium, the Governor noted the construction is slightly above 50% complete and that they are confident of meeting their year-end target. “We have collaborated with the contractor on an accelerated schedule to ensure timely delivery,” he explained, revealing that the county government is also injecting additional funds into the project to keep it on track.
Governor Barasa praised President Ruto for his commitment to the project, noting that it is a joint effort between the County Government of Kakamega and the national government via the Ministry of Sports. The county has allocated Sh600 million to complement national funding.
Future Prospects for the Stadium
Once completed, Bukhungu Stadium aims to position itself as a major venue for Africa’s regional sports events, including the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The stadium, which has already successfully hosted the Cecafa Under-18 Championships, is expected to be a part of the 2027 AFCON tournament, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.
Detailed Funding and Phases
The financial commitment from the county government thus far includes Sh875 million for the initial phases, which involved constructing government offices and amenities such as parking spaces and changing rooms. The second phase has focused on building a main VIP stand, along with additional facilities such as a gym and various changing rooms.
Ongoing enhancements include compliance with CAF standards, upgraded lighting, and new seating areas, designated to be completed in the coming three months.
By emphasizing unity and collaborative efforts, Governor Barasa is steering Kakamega County toward a more prosperous future, one project at a time. With the impending completion of these vital developments, the region stands at the brink of significant transformation, ready to accommodate both healthcare advancements and sporting excellence.
