Kakamega County is buzzing with anticipation as it prepares to host the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) National Term Two ball games, starting on July 30, 2025. This exciting event brings together teams from across the nation, promising athletes a platform to showcase their talents.

Assurance of Safety

Governor Fernandes Barasa has gone to great lengths to reassure secondary school students and stakeholders about their safety during the national sports championship. This assurance comes in light of recent health concerns following three confirmed cases of MPOX in Lugari Constituency. The governor emphasized the county government’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all participants and visitors.

“As the county government, we want to assure all participants and visitors that Kakamega is safe and ready to host the championship,” Governor Barasa stated firmly. His words reflect a proactive approach to addressing safety concerns prior to the event.

Enhanced Security Measures

In a bid to ensure a smooth-running week-long championship, security measures have been bolstered across the county. Governor Barasa, serving as co-chair of the County Security Council, highlighted the preparedness of security agencies to guarantee the safety of all participants.

“We will also have ambulances on standby throughout the week,” he added, reassuring everyone that health services will be readily available during the games.

Facilities Prepared for the Games

The physical infrastructure required to host the national games has also been a focal point of attention. Governor Barasa revealed that the sporting fields and other necessary facilities have been thoroughly prepared, not just for this event but also for the upcoming East Africa secondary school championships.

Renovations at Bukhungu Stadium are underway and making significant progress. “The artificial turf has already arrived and will be installed by the end of the week,” he assured stakeholders, demonstrating a commitment to providing high-quality facilities for the athletes.

Ceremony and Game Schedule

The KSSSA National Chairman, Kipchumba Maiyo, confirmed that the opening ceremony will kick off on Tuesday morning at the Mumias Sports Complex. This opening event is highly anticipated and will feature various teams, including junior and senior schools.

After the ceremonial proceedings, the first match will see Western Region champions Musingu High School take on Wajir High School from the North Eastern region. “All teams are expected at the Mumias Sports Complex for the opening ceremony. Musingu, as hosts, will face Wajir at 11 a.m.,” Maiyo stated, generating excitement for the competitive clash.

The finals of the national championship are set for Saturday, marking a thrilling conclusion to a week filled with competition and sportsmanship. Athletes, coaches, and fans alike are eager to witness the skill and talent on display.
