Four Arrests Made, Stolen Pistol Recovered During Raila’s Burial in Kisumu

Detectives from Kasagam police station raided the hideout after receiving a tip-off from members of the public and managed to recover the firearm

In a dramatic turn of events on Saturday, four suspects were arrested in Kisumu following an intelligence-led operation that uncovered a hidden stash of firearms. The investigation revealed that a pistol recovered during this raid is believed to have been stolen from a police officer during the burial of the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Bondo, Siaya County.

The operation took place in the Mbeme area, where law enforcement acted on a tip-off from vigilant members of the community. The prompt response of the detectives from the Kasagam police station exemplifies the crucial role of public cooperation in enhancing security and combating crime.

During the operation, authorities seized a loaded Jericho pistol, believed to have been snatched earlier from a police constable who was part of the security team assigned to Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa. The officer, currently based at the General Service Unit Headquarters in Ruaraka, was providing VIP protection during a high-profile event.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 4:30 PM as the officer, along with four others, was escorting the governor to his vehicle at the main gate of the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology (JOOUST). Rowdy youths, intent on causing disruption, surrounded the escorting officers. In the ensuing chaos, one of the youths managed to snatch the firearm loaded with 15 rounds from the officer’s holster before fleeing the scene.

Attempts to recover the weapon during the funeral proceedings were unsuccessful, primarily due to the throngs of mourners. This was not the only troubling incident on that day; several attendees reported thefts, as some individuals disguised as mourners took advantage of the large crowd for their illicit activities.

The situation rapidly escalated, prompting additional security measures. Authorities deployed more personnel to maintain order amid the growing unrest. Disturbingly, some individuals, shut out from the main event, resorted to robbing locals around the vicinity. These chaotic scenes extended beyond the university’s grounds, with people forcing their way into surrounding properties, including Opoda Farm, where the burial was taking place, all while asserting that they were merely celebrating cultural practices.

To restore peace and order, military special forces were also mobilized. Their presence aimed to manage the situation effectively and prevent further disturbances, showcasing the challenges law enforcement faces in ensuring security during public events.

The four arrested suspects are currently under interrogation, with authorities working to piece together the full extent of their involvement in the theft and other disruptions. As investigations continue, the cooperation between the police and citizens remains paramount in tackling crime and enhancing public safety.
