Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa (C) inspects construction works on Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega town on Wednesday /HILTON OTENYO
The completion of Bukhungu Stadium has become a focal point of Kakamega’s development plans, with Governor Fernandes Barasa emphasizing the urgency to fast-track the project. The governor has set a clear target to have the stadium operational by the end of the year, marking a significant milestone in the county’s sports infrastructure.
After being dormant for over three years, the national government has stepped in, taking over the stalled project through the Ministry of Sports. This intervention has reignited hopes for the stadium’s eventual completion, which is now reported to be more than 50% finished, as confirmed during a recent inspection by the governor.
During his visit, Barasa shared updates about an agreed-upon accelerated program with the contractor. He highlighted the county’s commitment by allocating additional funds to keep the construction process on track, demonstrating a proactive approach to revitalize this important facility.
To date, the Kakamega County Government has invested approximately Sh875 million into the project. This significant expenditure has been divided into two main phases, with Sh475 million dedicated to the first phase and Sh400 million to the second. The initial phase included essential features such as administrative offices, a parking space for 200 vehicles, spectator stands, as well as VIP and VVIP rooms, a doping control room, and changing facilities.
Building upon the initial phase, the second phase focused on constructing the main VIP stand and includes other vital amenities, such as terraces, a gym, six additional changing rooms, and a dispensary. The upcoming works aim to enhance the southern ‘C’ Section of the stadium, incorporating critical elements like lighting, updated changing rooms, and seating arrangements, all designed to meet the standards set by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
Barasa pointed out that this project is not solely a county initiative but a joint effort between the Kakamega County Government and the national government. He mentioned the county’s additional financial commitment of Sh600 million to complement national support, showcasing an example of effective partnership in infrastructure development.
In acknowledging the collaborative effort, Barasa expressed gratitude towards President William Ruto for his instrumental intervention, which has helped to ensure that structural works are advancing steadily. The governor also emphasized the necessity of increasing the workforce and synchronizing multiple activities on site to meet the project’s ambitious timelines.
Looking ahead, Barasa conveyed his confidence that Bukhungu Stadium could soon host matches for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament. This not only highlights the stadium’s capabilities but also its importance to the local and national sports scene.
The stadium has previously showcased its capacity to host significant events, efficiently facilitating the Cecafa Under-18 Championships. With Kenya set to co-host the 2027 AFCON alongside Uganda and Tanzania, Bukhungu Stadium is expected to play a crucial role in this historic event.
Notably, the ongoing construction of Bukhungu Stadium is part of a broader legacy established by former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, emphasizing the enduring commitment to enhancing the region’s sports facilities and community pride.
