Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has recently faced sharp criticism following a physical confrontation with a county officer, sparking a heated exchange of words and escalating tensions within local governance. The incident has prompted Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa to demand immediate repercussions against the Senator, highlighting concerns over civility and respect in public office.
The confrontation occurred on Friday, October 3, during a visit by the Senate’s Devolution Committee to inspect stalled projects in Kakamega County. Senator Khalwale engaged with Benjamin Andama, the county’s Executive Committee Member for Finance, amid allegations that Andama was sabotaging the county’s development efforts. The situation quickly went from verbal sparring to physicality, with Khalwale shoving Andama in an aggressive display of frustration over the alleged mismanagement of county resources.
The immediate aftermath of the altercation was captured in a video posted on Khalwale’s social media accounts. Viewers can hear Khalwale threatening to have Andama arrested on corruption charges, a claim that has only intensified the already fraught relationship between the two leaders. Other Senators present intervened to de-escalate the situation before it could spiral further out of control.

In the wake of the altercation, Governor Barasa wasted no time in releasing a comprehensive statement denouncing Khalwale’s actions. He called upon Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to expedite investigations into the incident, reflecting a broader concern for the integrity of the Senate’s oversight function. Barasa emphasized the importance of upholding the dignity of public offices, stating, “The conduct displayed by Senator Khalwale turned out to be regrettable and abhorrent.” He urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served for Andama, underscoring the need for accountability in public service.
Expressing his discontent further, Governor Barasa articulated that violent conduct and intimidation have no place in the interactions between elected officials and public servants. “We affirm that we shall not condone violence, intimidation, or disrespect against our officers, who continue to serve the people of Kakamega County with diligence and dedication,” he remarked.
Additionally, Barasa criticized Khalwale’s comments referring to Kakamega’s Chief Officers and County Executive Committee Members as “very junior people.” He argued that such remarks devalue the commitment and professionalism of public servants, while also contradicting the spirit of cooperation expected between the Senate and the county government. The Governor’s insistence on mutual respect and collaboration in governance reflects a desire for a more harmonious working relationship among local officials.
