Kakamega Traders Get a Boost with Launch of New Market

Kakamega County’s Market Modernization: A New Era for Trade

In a progressive move aligned with Fernandes Barasa’s Wealth Creation Pillar, the Kakamega County Government is diligently working on several modern markets set to transform the trading landscape. These initiatives aim to enhance commerce and foster a vibrant business environment, reinforcing the county’s commitment to economic growth.

Current Status of Market Developments

As per Trade Chief Officer Faith Gotira, significant progress has been made on the Bungasi, Koyonzo, Shibinga, and Lidambitsa markets, which are now between 65% and 95% complete. After experiencing delays, particularly in Koyonzo and Shibinga, construction has resumed and is advancing steadily. The return of the contractor, Shiatsala, is scheduled for next month, following earlier reviews by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) that stalled the project under the previous administration.

Enhancing Revenue and Infrastructure

Once finalized, these markets are projected to enhance revenue collection significantly while improving existing market infrastructure. This upgrade will not only provide a better trading environment but will also stimulate commercial activity across Kakamega County. According to Gotira, the developments are part of a broader strategy to ensure safer trading conditions for local vendors and businesses.

Completed Market Sheds and Ongoing Projects

In addition to the ongoing projects, several market sheds have already been completed, including Bushiri Market, Manda Market, Samitsi Market, and Khuqueen in Marama Central. These locations have been thoughtfully designed to provide structured, secure, and hygienic trading spaces. Other markets, such as Ikoli, Shiasa, and Chegulo, are also in the pipeline, each contributing to the holistic enhancement of Kakamega’s commercial infrastructure.

Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises

The operationalization of these markets is expected to particularly benefit small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are crucial to the local economy. By fostering a conducive business environment, these markets will fuel economic growth and expand opportunities for traders and consumers alike. The emphasis on structured and safe trading spaces underscores the county’s commitment to nurturing entrepreneurial ventures.

Future Expansion Plans

Faith Gotira has hinted at future expansion efforts, expressing the county’s intent to build even more markets. This initiative aims to continually enhance services and facilities available to residents and traders, reflecting the government’s dedication to improving living conditions and economic prospects for voters in Kakamega.

With all projects currently on track for completion, the community can look forward to a new era marked by modern, vibrant marketplaces that will invigorate local commerce and uplift the economic landscape of Kakamega County.
